This city has pretty well seen it all.
Here is a metropolis of 250,000 souls which, thousands of years ago had town halls, temples, brothels, Jews, early Christians, Paul and John, earthquakes, sailors. As you walk on the ruined marble walks you can imagine children playing, mothers surveying, patricians making laws, sailors getting drunk in what is now an out-of-bounds alley way. Watch the merchants talking to each other. Watch the whores comparing prices and clients. Saint Paul brought the word here. Saint John is buried around the corner. All gone. All gone. We walk on the abandoned marble flag stones, and their voices call out to us. |
